40 Compact Equipment JANUARY 2019
SIMPLE SOLUTIONS
T
oday's off-highway diesel engines are impressively
sophisticated and small. Engineered into equally
intricate and compact construction equipment,
these diesels are powerful, efficient, cost-effective
and clean. Advancements like electronic control systems
with high-pressure common rail systems deliver unparal -
leled performance and precision — faster responses and
more optimized power. A variety of high-tech aftertreat-
ment systems with acronyms like SCR, DPF and EGR are
now incorporated to clean pollutants. Multifaceted op-
tions like silent packs, intelligent turbochargers, radiators
and air cleaners can be included.
"Engines have become increasingly compact and effi-
cient due to several advancements in technology," con-
firms Kyle Brandemuhl, business director of diesel engines
Americas for Kohler. "This includes four valves per cylin-
der, high-pressure common rail up to 2,000 bar, cooled ex-
haust gas recirculation [EGR] and customized engine man-
agement software. These highly tuned components help
deliver more torque and quicker response in a significantly
smaller package."
Despite all these complex technologies, off-highway die-
sel engine makers are still heavily focused on connecting
both dealers and customers to simple solutions for these
